Key Features
The Hohner Marine Band 1896 Harmonica sticks faithfully to the design that inspired players over a century ago. As a result, this has been used by professionals all over the world due to its iconic blues sound. The 1896 is very responsive and there is no sensation of sluggishness from the reeds when you draw or blow. It can bend notes extremely well, allowing you to access the "blue" notes in between. Playing multiple notes produces a rich and full sound similar to an accordion.
The reed plates and covers are fixed together with nails like the original harmonicas were. A pearwood comb gives this harp its iconic "woody" tone and a double layer of lacquer prevents the wood from swelling over time. Curved covers with side vents further add to the blues sound while also allowing you to clearly hear your own tone. This harp comes with a traditional looking case to keep your harp safe from knocks and bumps.

The Marine Band harmonica from Hohner was first introduced in 1896 and its impact is impossible to overstate. Countless musicians were attracted to this instrument due to its accessible price and pocketable size, making it the perfect harp for musicians on the move. The unique "wailing" sound produced from bending notes played a key role in establishing the sound of blues harmonica playing.
Over the years Hohner has made other harps in the Marine Band range, each designed to cater for the different needs of musicians. The classic 1896 harmonica is for those who want the original design invented in 1896. The Deluxe is for musicians looking for that classic sound and design, but with alterations from the 21st century. If you want that Marine Band sound for a more contemporary style of music, then the Crossover is the harp for you. Finally, the Thunderbird is for players wanting a deeper sound.
Hohner was founded in 1857 when clockmaker Matthias Hohner began making harmonicas. Hohner quickly gained traction in the world of harmonica players and was particularly popular in the United States. From the 1920s Hohner began making chromatic harmonicas, now players could access all 12 notes without the need of bending. To this day Hohner is perhaps best known for their harmonicas with a huge range catering for all players in all genres of music. They also make melodicas, a similar instrument that uses a keyboard to produce different notes rather than mouth shape alone. At Gear4music we stock a broad range of Hohner harmonicas and melodicas plus accessories.
