Show-stopping design
Launched in 2020, the YBS-480 immediately picked up the prestigious Best In Show award at that year's NAMM show. This was the first baritone saxophone that Yamaha had released in 35 years - suffice to say, it's been worth the wait! It's predecessor - the YBS-52 - had been a dependable student bari, popular the world over. But Yamaha subscribe to the Japanese philosophy of kaizen, which means continuous improvement.
They completely re-engineered their design, making enhancements all over the instrument in order to better accommodate student saxophonists. If the YBS-52 is anything to go by, this is a baritone sax which will hold its quality for many, many years to come.
Start learning with the best
The Yamaha YBS480 is one of the best options for the keen baritone saxophone player. Yamaha has improved the mechanism by redesigning the front F, low A, octave key, palm keys, upper and lower table keys. This improvement enables the saxophone to respond better across the whole range, but especially the low register. To further enhance the tone of the instrument, Yamaha has introduced the neck from their professional 62 bari to the YBS-480. Known in the industry for providing a smooth and polished tone, this neck is sure to enhance the playing of any keen sax player.
Playability for everybody
Everything about the YBS480 baritone saxophone has been designed to ensure young adults can comfortably start playing. Firstly, Yamaha shortened the bell on the YBS480, providing a consistent sound across all registers, whilst making the sax being lighter and easier to handle. Yamaha understands that most bari saxophone players start learning on the alto or tenor first. This is why Yamaha designed the key layout to be lighter and more ergonomic - so transitioning from other models is an effortless experience. The keys have even been moved closer together, so people with smaller hands feel more comfortable.
At the bottom of the Yamaha YBS480 baritone sax, you'll find their new peg design. Although not included, having the option to play with a peg is a great advantage to young bari sax players. Around the back of the sax you'll find Yamaha's new strap-ring positioning which provides you with a more natural playing style.
