Founding member of Black Sabbath, Tony is credited for laying down the blueprints for heavy metal and hard rock. In particular, he's iconic for his use of his heavily modified 1964 Gibson SG, a guitar that became synonymous with brawny and bold rock tones. And this Epiphone SG Special seeks to capture that metal magic. Sporting the iconic vintage cherry coating and a host of Iommi-worthy hardware, it's ready to bring the noise.

This is a neck carved for creativity, as it's modelled after Tony's own backshape. A rounded "C" profile fits comfortably in your palm, and leaves plenty of room for your fingers on the fretboard, so you can focus on unleashing blazing licks and lightning leads. Even better, there's tonnes of room at the high end thanks to the SG's cutaway shape, so you have full manoeuvrability over all the scales.

The voice of rock

Equipped with a pair of Epiphone PRO-P90's, the SG Special commands a powerful voicing. And it's a voice that's ideal for vintage crunchy tones thanks to their warm output and balanced tuning. Added to that, the two positions afford you a huge amount of flexibility in creating varied tones. At the neck you'll get a rich, chunky and thick presence that's ideal for injecting bass into your note. Over at the bridge you've got a more cutting, treble filled tone for burning through a mix.

Controlling the sound couldn't be easier either, as these powerful pickups are wired to the CTS potentiometers and Orange drop capacitors. And this means you're going to get exact response from your settings, where each setting of the tone and volume knobs provides a clear difference. Roll them down for cleaner, tamer harmonics, or crank them up to the max to unleash flamethrower sonics.

Performance hardware

Epiphone have equipped the SG special with a set of Grover Rotomatic machine heads and an adjustable wraparound bridge. This combo ensures that your tuning is stable throughout a performance due to their tight string grip, and in addition, intonation will be simple to fix if it ever goes awry.

What's more is that everything you play with be rich in sustain and clarity. A Graph Tech nut allows each string to vibrate clearly and with minimal buzz so that you can enjoy the full impact of each and every note. And all this hardware is mounted on a two-piece solid mahogany body that will only enhance the tones further with its earthy and deep sonic qualities.
