Faithfully recreating that vintage feel, Fender have produced this excellent signature with a custom shaped maple neck, which is based upon Johnny’s ’65 guitar. The search for that classic playability, however, doesn’t stop there. Utilising vintage sized frets and a 7.25" radius, the guitar achieves a comfortable playing experience, whilst still being authentically vintage, resulting in an instrument that is an absolute dream to play.
Johnny Marr’s unique ability and approach to his guitar playing was something, that until The Smiths, we had never seen in the realm of music before. This individual approach resulted in a tone which defined not only a single band, or a full genre, but a whole generation. Fender have pulled out all the stops to ensure that you can obtain this glistening shine yourself. Utilising the time-tested, classic alder body, the sound is infused with a distinct mid-range, exceptional lows, and highs that sizzle but avoid any harshness - but most importantly, it offers sustain in abundance.
This sonic foundation is perfectly captured by a pair of Custom-wound Bare Knuckle Johnny Marr Single Coil pickups, positioned at the bridge and neck. Built to provide that iconic twang and glisten, these pickups are crafted exactly to Johnny’s own specifications, so you are capturing the full sound as Marr himself intended. Working in combination with a four-way switch and a volume and tone control, you can shape this tone to your own preference.
This Jaguar is equipped with a delightful rosewood fretboard that ensures you have a soft and cushioned surface to blitz from chord position to chord position without hindrance, allowing you to perform shimmering arpeggios with complete freedom. Tuning stability is delivered through a traditional Jaguar bridge, but Mustang saddles are utilised to increase its efficiency. That iconic pulse can also be elevated, with the classic vintage tremolo arm.
Johnny Marr is often famed for his role in the band, The Smiths, but he has been involved in an abundance of other musical adventures, ranging from bands like The Cribs and Modest Mouse, to his own solo work. One thing has been consistent throughout all these journeys: his revolutionary, virtuosic style. Marr’s scintillating arpeggios were seen as something out of left field, at a time when rock clichés where in full swing. Marr took issues with these uniform approaches to rock, and restricted himself from using power chords, distortion, lengthy solos, or big rock chord changes, in an attempt to diversify the scene.
His sound is often seen as more sophisticated than that of his contemporaries. Delicate in nature and embellished with nuances, he expertly fills out the space left behind from the lack of overused chordal storms. Drowned in beautiful chorus and spacious hall reverb, his sound soon becomes a blissful sea of sonic depth. Standing out from the crowd means that now an abundance of modern bands cite Marr as an influence to their own style. From this it's clear to see why a prestigious manufacturer like Fender wanted to honour him with his own signature model.
