The BB P35 Bass features a body constructed from a unique blend of maple and alder, increasing its overall stiffness for an accentuated midrange to cut through dense mixes. The dense maple centre provides a more uniform transmission of vibrations between the body and neck than traditional 1-piece bodies, delivering an unparalleled resonance and sustain. The alder top and bottom provides the bass with a lusciously smooth, deep bass tone, beefing up the midrange while adding a slight sizzle to the high end.
The maple/mahogany combination delivers incredible stability, while offering the best of both tonewoods for a bright, mellow sound. The neck is designed with an incredibly thin profile, improving its playability and feel to suit modern and traditional players. Coupled with a rosewood fingerboard, the 3 woods provide the bass with a complex high end and a smooth playing experience. The set of lightweight tuners provide better balance than standard tuners, complementing the overall feel of the bass while its open-gear design adds to the Yamaha’s aesthetics.
The Yamaha’s neck is attached to the body with a 6-bolt miter neck joint, offering a more efficient transfer of string vibration thought the body than conventional bolt-on joints. The miter joint holds the neck closer to the body to provide a tighter hold and improving sustain and resonance, allowing the bass to bring life to every note.
A set of powerful custom V7 pickups provide the Yamaha with its incredible tonal range, designed with alnico V magnets to deliver a fat, penetrating tone which complements the alder/maple/alder body. These organic, well-defined pickups have been carefully selected for the 700 series, ensuring players receive a uniquely versatile performance with the classic BB tone. A single tone control and 2 volume controls provide versatile tone shaping, allowing players to dial in the perfect sound for their playing.
The bass’ vintage plus bridge enhances the overall sustain and resonance of the strings by incorporation a unique ‘diagonal body through stringing’. This is achieved by angling the strings at the saddle to pass through the body at a 45-degree angle, placing less stress on the strings as opposed to the more traditional vertical stringing. This method allows the bridge to transfer the string vibrations to the body reliably and efficiently. The vintage plus bridge also allows the strings to be attached to the tail end, with a convertible bridge offering 2 different angles for precise tone shaping. The bridge is also equipped with steel saddles and plate, offering a slightly deep low end with a bright tone.
While new basses tend to look nice and fresh, it usually takes a while before they reach a better tone and feel. This is because basses benefit from being ‘played in’, a process which occurs when the instrument matures and opens up to deliver a better sound quality and playability. Yamaha’s Initial Response Acceleration treatment makes this ‘played in’ feel and sound available from day one. This is achieved by applying specific vibrations to the complete bass to mimic this ageing process, resulting in a high-quality sound on a fresh looking bass.
